The Afternoon Energy Drain

Ever wonder why you get tired in the afternoon? Long work hours, foods we eat, lack of sleep. They all play a part. However, it’s interesting to note that even without eating lunch, you’d still get tired. An energy slump in the afternoon is actually part of our normal circadian rhythm, our body’s internal body clock. For some reason, we’ve evolved to where we’re meant to take a nap in the afternoon, which I would love to do every day!

So, how do we boost our energy in the afternoon? Many have benefited with our vitamin IV infusions of high dose of B vitamins and antioxidants, but if anything try the following suggestions for more energy.

  • Food definitely makes a difference. The “bad” carbs like sugary drinks, breads, rice and pasta, even the whole wheat kind, can drain our energy. If you focus on more fruits and vegetables (don’t forget that fruits and vegetables are carbs too), you will get a boost of natural energy which is distributed better throughout the day. Fruits and vegetables are high in fiber, which is also improves blood sugar, cholesterol and the gastrointestinal tract function.
  • Eat protein in the morning like a protein shake or hard-boiled egg. Unlike the bad carbs, proteins give you better sustained energy.
  • Eat small, healthy meals throughout the day, but especially at lunch. This keeps your blood sugar even longer so you won’t crash too hard after lunch.
  • Most importantly, exercise! Take a quick 10 minute power walk after lunch. This will get the blood circulating to your body as well as your brain in order to get you ready to tackle the afternoon.

Better energy boils down to better lifestyle choices. Strive for change. Get out of your comfort zone. If you’re not happy with your lot in life, it all starts with you! The situation and people around you won’t change, unless you change your current habits. That starts with shifting eating and exercise habits, which will lead to better energy which leads to more success!
